Jail term, penalty for holding old notes after March 31

Having more than 10 banned notes will become a criminal offence after March 31, under a new rule approved by the government today.

The Specified Bank Notes Cessation of Liabilities Ordinance or executive order had been cleared by the cabinet and will soon be sent to the President for his sign-off. 500 and 1,000-rupee notes were banned by the government on November 8 in an anti-corruption move. The government has said that after December 30, banned notes will be accepted only by the RBI or Reserve Bank of India.
